Signifikansi Nilai Kemakmuran dalam Perjanjian Lama

Tafsir terhadap arti kemakmuran dalam Perjanjian Lama tampaknya menimbulkan
perbedaan pandangan di dalam kekristenan. Beberapa menilai kemakmuran sebagai sesuatu
yang sepenuhnya negatif dan sebagian lain mengejarnya sebagai bentuk berkat Allah. Untuk
memberikan pandangan yang Alkitabiah terhadap persoalan ini, tulisan ini akan
memanfaatkan metode studi induktif pada Alkitab Ibrani atau Perjanjian Lama pada teks
Masoret (MT) dengan mengumpulkan data-data terkait teologi kemakmuran dalam
Perjanjian Lama lewat ayat-ayat yang secara langsung menyebut kata Ibrani עשר maupun kata
lainnya seperti sinonim, antonim, dan kata yang berhubungan maknanya (cognate). Tanpa
bermaksud memberikan daftar dan tafsir ayat yang komprehensif, dan dengan
memanfaatkan pengetahuan latar belakang pandangan dunia Timur Dekat Kuno terhadap
sistem keadilan sosial, kesimpulan dari tulisan ini adalah bahwa pada dirinya sendiri,
kemakmuran tidak pernah dianggap jahat dalam Perjanjian Lama. Akhirnya, walaupun baik
pada dirinya sendiri, kemakmuran perlu diwaspadai, sebab dalam dunia yang telah jatuh ke
dalam dosa ini, sekalipun umat-Nya telah ditebus oleh Kristus, segala sesuatu yang baik pada
dirinya sendiri selalu bisa diselewengkan sampai kemakmuran itu muncul dalam bentuknya
yang murni pada tahap pemuliaan kelak bersama Kristus di hadirat-Nya.
